2024 Practical Hunting European Championship Italy
European Derby
Friday, September 6th, at 4 p.m., kicked off the European Derby, a partridge test reserved for dogs under 30 months old. It was judged by Pino Zambelli (CH) and Dalibor Pesutic (HR) and took place in two phases. The first round took place on a field without birds, where nine young dogs were examined and judged based on passion, quest intensity, speed, ease, and suppleness of canter, as well as head carriage. At the end of this first round, three dogs were selected to compete in the final round, which took place on a field with partridges: Sheantullagh Ginger (Gianni Bonatto, ITA), Coldcoats Ranger (Petra Vojackova, CZ), and Unik du Val de Loue (Jean Pierre Gotti, FR).
At the end of the three rounds, the three dogs having found and pointed a partridge, they were ranked according to their level of qualities. Based on the height of her performance, the speed of her gait, the enterprise of her quest and the violence of her point, the judges designated UNIK as the winner of the European Derby, at just 16 months old.

European Championship
The field for this Championship is composed of hills with a varied biotope: alfalfa crops, copses, and wastelands. Such a biotope requires a dog capable of adapting at all times to all these varied terrains and vegetation; on the same course, it must be able to spread out to cover a large patch of alfalfa, then immediately reduce speed and reach to control a small patch of wasteland, without neglecting the copse that follows, and must again gain ground on one side to cover a new grassy patch. All this takes place on hillsides and valleys where the wind's influence is sometimes complicated and changeable.
The game consists mainly of a sufficient number of pheasants, raised in aviaries on the grounds. The wild behavior of these birds is sometimes disconcerting for the dogs but is nevertheless selective, which is the goal of these competitions. The diversity of these grounds and the quality of the game are truly well-suited to organizing a European Practical Hunting Championship.
Thirty-six Irish Setters were entered under the flags of eight nations: Italy, France, Austria, Slovakia, Switzerland, Croatia, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. Two reds proved to be of a superior level: AJAX, a Ukrainian dog, and ACTER, an Italian dog. LILI from the Rond de Beaumé was the best female over the two days. Thank you to the SIS Irish Setter delegation team for their warm welcome and excellent organizational work.
